Boy Wonder’s New Toothbrush

My son is a wonder to me.. He’s getting old enough that he’s beginning to really surprise me with the depth of thought he’s able to communicate.. Yet, the spirit of childhood is still firmly entrenched in his personality, and I am so glad for that.. He’s pretty ‘camera aware,’ as the son of a photographer.. He often asks me not to photograph him.. On this occassion, I was walking past the bathroom and overheard some silliness.. I had time to grab a camera with the wrong lens, hence a number of cropped images.. And some pretty low light forced me to push the iso… But I still like the photos…. I have no idea what 5 year old boys like my son ‘see’ when they look in the mirror..I don’t think he ever saw ME.. But I got a little glimpse into him, I think..

Preview of Show People: The Jefferson Theatre

Ok, I’ve been teasing you all for a while now.. It’s time to tell you a little about my longterm project:  Show People.. I’m not even sure if that will remain the name.. I’d say we’re still ‘ridin’ the bronco, to see where it’s goin,’  And of course, that’s often the most fun, anyway.. With partners Guillermo Ubilla,, Nick Silvester, and JP Palakawongs, I hope to tell the story of the people of The Jefferson Theatre today and in history.. Next year, marks this venue’s 100th anniversary as an entertainment venue.  (It was a bank for two years before being sold in 1912, to a theater company..) And we hope to tell our story with a bit of a twist… In this first installment, we look into the past and honor the great Houdini, who did perform at The Jefferson, back in the day.  Our ‘model,’ is Warren Parker, one of the stage managers at The Jefferson.  A great deal more photography is to be made at ‘The Jeff,’ I hope.  This story becomes more interesting to me, every time I think about it..

The Electric Circus, with The Party Liberation Front at The Jefferson Theatre

Working on my longterm project: SHOW PEOPLE has been really fun up to this point.. I’m not ready to blog about that yet.. But I had to share a fascinating evening I spent recently, with photographers Guillermo Ubilla and Nick Silvester where we worked on that project, while simultaneously shooting and watching The Electric Circus, at The Jeff.  We’d made arrangements ahead of time to use some of their performers in a portrait shoot we were doing for our project.  They kindly and enthusiastically allowed us to stay on and shoot their show, after our own work was done for the night.

Burlesque is usually a love/hate kind of thing with people.. I find people pretty much 100% in one camp, or the other about it. I found the performers on this night to be wildly dedicated to their craft and art.  The costumes alone were stunning.  Performances were chocked full of humor, nuance, and yes — sexuality.  The crowd had such a great sense of humor, and so did everyone on stage.. Some beautiful performers.. It was a pleasure to shoot..

Enjoy this highly edited set of images from that night.

Playing with Fire, On Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall…

I love where I live.. I have lived in many places over the years.  We moved A LOT, as a kid.. Still more, when I enlisted in the military.. And even more wandering, when I was working in radio broadcasting.. There are ‘cool’ places to live.. And some that are .. well.. Not quite so cool… Charlottesville, Virginia is COOL.  And on a recent night, while working on a project at The Jefferson Theatre, I was reminded of one of the many reasons why I feel so positively about living in this area.

Scintillation is a group of dedicated performance artists who mix fire with dance.. And don’t let their ‘Sexy Island of Misfit Toys’ attire fool you, these guys are serious about what they do.  I’ve had the pleasure in the past, of photographing a practice session.  I was so glad to catch them in full wardrobe on the Downtown Mall on this night, it was a glorious one.. There were tons of pedestrians standing by, and street musicians heard in the distance.

Enjoy this little look into their great show that night.  They perform around town regularly.. If you catch them live — it’s a real treat, Cville-Style…
